Breast Cancer Awareness For Female Veterans

During the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, the public is inundated with information regarding various programs, events, news reports and  health services for the prevention of breast cancer. Only in  recent years  has breast cancer in men  been added to the mix. There is another group that requires recognition and that is women of the armed forces.

Breast Cancer AwarenessVA health facilities have traditionally provided few services that address the special needs of women in the military and veterans. As of late the administration is making an effort to provide a much needed service for women.  El Paso Veterans Affairs recently created a Women’s Clinic. Much to their surprise women came in unprecedented numbers. they now have a waiting list for appointments into March 2009!

There For The Action || Missing From History

Lioness, a documentary film, tells the story of a group of female Army support soldiers who were part of the first program in American history to send women into direct ground combat. It takes an intimate look at war through the eyes of U.S. military women, following five female support soldiers who served together for a year in Iraq supporting Marine Corps units in direct ground combat.

Without the same training as their male counterparts but with a commitment to serve as needed, these young women fought in some of the bloodiest counterinsurgency battles of the Iraq war and returned home as part of this country’s first generation of female combat veterans. Lioness makes public, for the first time, their hidden history.
Lioness was aired on PBS on June 2, 2009.

Depression in Veterans and Elderly

Two groups of people who have been among the forgotten, invisible and medically underserved are veterans, especially women veterans, and the elderly. During times when there is a downward trend in the state of the economy and no immediate changes in the provision of health care services for underserved individuals, it is most likely that the rate and incidence of depression will increase. In addition, depression has been linked to sudden cardiac death. In comparing the health characteristics of elderly women and women veterans, similarities can be found in the two groups.

Descriptive factors which may be ascribed to elderly women can also be found among female veterans. Those factors include being female, single, living alone, weak or no support system, limited income, poor nutritional status, barriers to health care and underinsured. Read more here…
