Societal Disconnect vs Togetherness

Wednesday, 14 January, 2009

I have forecast 2009 to be a year for forming relationships in families, business, communities and friends. In addition I’ve written and spoken about the disconnect in society at large; the lost art of hand written letters, thank you notes and invitations. We are loosing the art of verbal communication with the advent of technological advances. This is how I feel and sometimes wonder if I’m the only one on the planet earth who think that these activities are a form of courtesy, respect and man’s humanity toward man.

Well! Low and behold I received Michele Obama’s ‘Call to Service’ email. It  addressed my very concern regarding societal disconnect. You may view the video below.

Changes In the Year 2009

Tuesday, 30 December, 2008

ornamentsThe New Year is almost here and I’m still in deep thought,  generating my list of accomplishments for 2009. In addition, I have papers yet to be sorted, tossed and filed, complete the annual African American customs of my ancestors before the arrival of the New Year, reply to invitations, etc. One day remaining before ’09 and I haven’t gotten to my Afro-Brazilan rituals. WOW! Nevertheless it’s all very exciting! Everything begins with changing ourselves. We can change our thoughts and the choices we make which will in turn have an impact on society at large.
In 1959 uneducated Tibetan women made a very educated decision and joined together to rebel in a non-violent manner against their captors. They made choices regarding their plight and the education of their children. Some of the women remained in Tibet while their children made the long journey throught the mountains into India. My choices are small in comparison. Just think, that was 1959!
Now here we are in the Century of Women. Globally, women are continuing to make great accomplishments in their lives and society. I foresee 2009 as being a year of great dialogue and building relationships-all starting with women. There is a feeling of  ‘change’ in the atmosphere and an undercurrent of buzzing.

Years ago, my family, the Miner’s had to have a dialogue with the Mason’s to build a positive relationship for the good of the community at large. We are a nation built on dialogue and relationships.
May your list of accomplishments for 2009 include more dialogue and building positive relationships within your family, circle of friends and in building your business. This can be one of your lifestyle changes  for 2009.

My wish for you is to have a healthy, prosperous, joyous and abundant New Year!
