Diabetes or Obesity: Who’s Winning the Battle?

Diabetes is right up there with obesity on the front line. They are battling each other to see which one win the challenge of overcoming all your efforts to hold off cardiovascular disease. I have to view the three conditions in the same context because one can be a risk factor for the other condition.

It is another silent killer, especially in the African-American community. Millions of people in the United States are walking around with or on the verge of being diagnosed with diabetes (approximately 80 million people have been diagnosed). This takes living on the edge to another level.

 Weight loss is the number one resolution for the new year ! It is also the resolution that is the first to be abondoned!!

The prevalence of obesity among adults and children has increased in the U.S. since the mid 1970′s. Obesity can no longer be described as pleasingly plump, being overweight, or as baby fat. It is now a chronic health problem and risk factor for hypertension, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The good news is that the prevalence of smoking has decreased! It is no longer the greatest health threat to individuals.

 Henceforth, I will be writing more posts and newsletter articles about the ramifications of obesity and it’s impact on each member of  society and the world at large.  In addition to the small steps we can take to resolve the problems of weight gain.Obesity puts a financial strain on the budgets of countries, the cost of health care, the under-insured and not insured.

Reasons to Eat Well

How well one eat -good nutrition- plays an important  role in healthy living. Starting at about age 30 body fat increases and muscle mass decreases. As the years go by there is a disproportionate number of obese individuals in our society. Why does this happen?  Our metabolism slows down and the result is weight gain.

Eating well, as a general rule, does the following:

  1. Helps lower the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes
  2. Help us loose weight or maintain our weigh
  3. Help lower our cholesterol
  4. Help build and maintain our bones
  5. Help lower our risk of diverticulosis and diverticulitis
