Achieving Health and Wellness

Road Toward Wellness

Degrees of Wellness

Have you seen an obese person or someone who looks too thin and said to yourself, “He/she looks so unhealthy”, “Their blood pressure must be extremely high/low”? Disregarding appearance, the person may be living in the process of wellness and be overweight, aged, physically challenged.

Wellness is not a static state.  There are many degrees of wellness, just as there are degrees of illness. We do not become well and stay well. It certainly is not true in my case. It’s a continual process of moving toward a state of optimal and  ultra wellness. Our  motivation to stay on the wellness path waxes and wanes. Comes and goes. I am not always clear about  from whence it comes or where it goes but sometimes we have to go deep within or partner with a wellness coach to help us get back on that wellness path, increase our exercise, and energy,  rev up the flow of those feel good, pain relieving hormones! I say this because we are energetic beings. Energy is all around us. Energy is everywhere.

When I was at the Mahatma Gandhi Museum in India, one of his quotes posted on the wall read:

Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.

This quote also applies to wellness. You may be physically fit, but an emotional wreck. Or you may be depressed, unhappy or not connected in a spiritual sense. These states of being can be energy drains and lower a persons resistance and lead to overeating or the intake of excessive amounts of alcohol.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. What lies beneath the depression or unhappiness which results in overeating? As you can envision, the body, mind and spirit are not harmony.

Where do we go from here to achieve health and wellness?

First, we have to become aware and acknowledge that our harmonic balance is out out of sync. Just as our circadian rhythm becomes out of balance and our body doesn’t know when to sleep or wake. Second, is education. Third, education about the degrees of wellness and illness leads to growth as we progress on the path to optimal and ultra wellness.
