New Orleans Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Scharmaine Lawson-Baker, Founder and CEO of Advanced Clinical Consultants, is the ideal Nurse Practitioner to profile during 2010 Women’s History Month. She has a rich and full professional lifestyle that is evolving and growing every day. Her medical House Call practice encompasses aspects of city and rural nursing. Registered nurses (RN) were part of the historic event which occured yesterday, when the Health Care Reform was passed. In keeping with that event I feel it is important for all of us to have a better understanding of the professional RN workforce in the United States. At the present moment, there is a need for nurses, primary care and geriatric care providers to care for an aging population( the fastest growing segment of the population). In order to precent an accurate account of the RN workforce in the United States I have written below an excerpt of the document, The Registered Nurse Workforce.

As of March 2008, there were approximately 3,063,163 licensed Registered Nurses. This is a 5.3 % increase in the RN population from March 2004. Not all individuals holding an active RN license are employed in nursing. The number of employed nurses and the number of nurses employed full-time have both increased.
